Walked into One-Eyed Jack's Cantina like he'd done a hundred times |
And from the moment that he entered, that whole place went deathly quiet |
He found his girl Teresa, who was always waitin' there |
Paid for some dead traveler's money, then he took her up the stairs |
Well he never spoke a word, but he'd always treat her kind |
And by now she'd just stopped wonderin' why he chose her every time |
She was happy just to hold him, and he was happy too it seemed |
And sometimes she'd ask him questions just to fill the space between: |
"Why do you wear a dead man's boots? |
Where did you get those nasty scars? |
Don't you tire of that wall of iron you've got built around your heart? |
Don't you see those creepin' shadows standin', waitin' in the wings? |
Why you racin' off to Hell when you can stay right here with me?" |
One day word blew into town that someone robbed the Adair train |
But they took two in the back as they made their getaway |
Teresa found him in her room lyin', bleedin' in her bed |
She ran to his side and kissed him, then she held him close and said: |
"Why do you wear a dead man's boots? |
Why do you have to live so hard? |
Don't you tire of that wall of iron you've got built around your heart? |
Don't you heed those creepin' shadows standin', waitin' in the wings. |
Don't go racin' off to Hell when you can stay right here with me." |
Took a folded piece of paper, and he slipped it in her hand |
And he said, "There, you'll find my fortune, never have to work again. |
Well, I just wanted you to know that I've loved you all these years." |
And then he died there in her arms with her voice ringing in his ears: |
"Why do you wear a dead man's boots? |
Why do you have to live so hard? |
Don't you tire of that wall of iron you've got built around your heart? |
Don't you heed those creepin' shadows standin', waitin' in the wings. |
Don't go racin' off to Hell when you can stay right here with me. |
"Don't go racin' off to Hell when you can stay right here with me! |
"Oh why you racin' off to Hell when you can stay right here with me?" |
